beggers life story

There are two kinds of beggars in India:

  • One who begs out of necessity
  • One who begs out of habit.
Sadly, there are more beggars who beg out of habit than than the ones who beg out of necessity.
They beg because they find it to be a profitable business. Zero investment, maximum benefit.
But there are countless others who beg because they really need to. They are refused jobs, they have a family who don't have anyone else to take care about them, they have lost the strength to do some work, so the only thing left for them to do is begging.
And in India, it is not hard for a beggar to earn enough to feed himself and his family and attend to other necessities. The only thing you need to do is to master the art of begging.
I met a boy on a moving train. He was around 17 . He apparently had lost his father and was begging for money so that he could perform the last rites of his father. Most of the passengers seemed to be sympathetic towards him and was readily paying him more that they usually pay a regular beggar.
A man was watching the boy keenly. He asked him,”How many fathers do you have?”
The boy gave a puzzled look.
“A few months back you were asking money on this train saying the same old story that you had lost your father?”
Now look at this picture of Shila Ghosh, a woman aged 85 who started selling fries near Exide crossing in Kolkata after her only son died of cancer. She does that to fend for herself.

She did not start begging after losing her son. She is leading a life full of dignity
